Gravesen seals Madrid switch

Everton today conceded defeat in their bid to hold on to midfield talisman Thomas Gravesen.

The 28-year-old Denmark international has been the driving force behind the Toffees' rise to fourth place in the Barclays Premiership this season.

But they have failed to resist Real Madrid's overtures for the player, and he will tie up the loose ends of what is believed to be a £2.1million transfer when he undergoes a medical in Spain.

Everton had faced losing Gravesen for nothing at the end of the season when his contract was due to expire.

Chief executive Keith Wyness said: "No-one at Everton wanted to lose Thomas Gravesen. We did everything we could to keep him.

"Once it became clear Thomas had set his heart on a move to Real Madrid we fought hard for the best possible deal. To that end I believe we have been successful."

Gravesen's agent, John Sivebaek, said: "I can confirm that Real Madrid and Everton have agreed terms for the transfer of Thomas Gravesen.

"The player and myself will be travelling to meet the officials of Madrid in order to discuss his potential move during the course of the next 24 hours."

However, Madrid consider the deal is all but done and say they have agreed a three-and-a-half-year deal.

He is expected to be presented to the media as a Real player at a 7pm press conference tonight.

A statement from the club read: "Real Madrid have reached an agreement for the transfer of Thomas Gravesen to the White Club.

"Gravesen will play for Real Madrid in what remains of this season and three more."
