Graveney: Champions Trophy is crucial for our World Cup plans

14 April 2012

England chairman of selectors David Graveney believes the ICC Champions Trophy will be a vital opportunity to rediscover one-day form in time for next year's World Cup.

The forthcoming tournament in India has been derided in some quarters but Graveney is adamant that it is being treated with the utmost importance by everyone in the England set-up.

"We are not running out of time but there are not many games between now and the World Cup," said Graveney.

"It's important from the ICC Trophy and VB series (the one-day international series which follows the Ashes) that we must have established a settled side by then."

England kick off their Champions Trophy campaign against the hosts on October 15 and Graveney added: "We are taking it very seriously. It is a proper tournament and people want to win it.

"It's good for your confidence so we certainly do not degrade it. Our form in one-day cricket has not been as good as it has in Test cricket.

"We need our injured players back playing one-day cricket, which hasn't happened since we played Australia mid-summer last year, then we just need them to be playing together to be honest."

England salvaged a 2-2 draw in their last one-day series outing against Pakistan, having been whitewashed 5-0 by Sri Lanka.
