Gerrard reveals ruthless streak

12 April 2012

Steven Gerrard wants England to prove they are a lethal football force against minnows Andorra.

Gerrard admits England were guilty of over-hype when they went to Germany, claiming they were going to win the World Cup. But he wants Steve McClaren's team to develop a killer streak and demolish minnows like Andorra, ranked 132nd in the world.

Gerrard said: "We have to become a consistent team because that's the only way to become successful at this level. You have to be lethal. You have to be ruthless."

He added: "In the past we never played as a team, we were guilty of playing as individuals.

"I've got to show Andorra respect but I'm an honest lad and, the way we played against Greece, we should beat Andorra quite comfortably.

"It would be immature of me to say we're going to win by a certain scoreline.

"If we're winning 4-0 at half-time, we have to come out and perform exactly the same in the second half and score as many as we can, start sending a message out that we mean business."

England were four-up at half-time in their friendly against Greece earlier this month. They were simply irresistible in the first half but sat back after the break and coasted to an easy 4-0 win.

Gerrard said: "The most important thing is to qualify but I think the fans have been frustrated with the performances and we want to try to win with style, play with freedom and relax.

"There is always going to be a great amount of pressure on this team because of the quality of players in the squad."
