Gavin turns attentions to weightier matters

Disappointment: Frankie Gavin didn't make it into the boxing competition in Beijing after failing to make the lightweight limit

World amateur champion Frankie Gavin insists he has nothing to prove when he makes his professional debut in Birmingham.

Gavin controversially failed to make the lightweight limit for the Beijing Olympics but the 23-year-old, who will now campaign as a light-welterweight, said: "I've nothing to prove to anybody. People who know their boxing know I did my best. I had been fighting at lightweight for six years, but I was still growing and I couldn't make it in China. I'm much more comfortable, and stronger, at light-welter."

Gavin goes in against George Kadaria of Georgia at the National Indoor Arena. On the same bill, topped by Matt Skelton's defence of the Commonwealth heavyweight title against Martin Rogan of Northern Ireland, Olympic gold medalist James DeGale and Beijing team-mate Billy Joe Saunders also make their professional debuts.

But promoter Frank Warren's stable of Olympians have been beaten to the punch by Tony Jeffries, the light-heavyweight bronze medallist in Beijing, who takes his professional bow in Barnsley tonight.
