Gallas is needed for Cup replay

13 April 2012

William Gallas should be fit for Chelsea's FA Cup fourth round replay at West Ham on Wednesday night.

The French defender has missed the past three matches because of a jarred knee and his absence was felt at Leicester on Saturday when Chelsea snatched a 3-2 victory.

"We were lucky," said striker Gianfranco Zola, who came off the substitutes' bench for his 250th Chelsea appearance and a goal from a free-kick.

Chelsea's main problem was in defence. The back four of Mario Melchiot, John Terry, Marcel Desailly and Graeme Le Saux - so effective against Leeds at Stamford Bridge three days earlier - were run ragged by Callum Davidson.

Terry seemed to have his mind on anything but the game. He failed to keep tabs on James Scowcroft as the striker headed Leicester's goals from a corner in the 23rd and 67th minutes.

Fortunately for Chelsea Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was in excellent form, scoring two goals.

"Jimmy got three touches all afternoon and two of them were goals," said Scowcroft.

Chelsea will have to make defensive changes on Wednesday because Melchiot is suspended. Gallas, the 24-year-old who has impressed all season, will get the nod if he's fit.
