Fulham lead race for Helguson

Fulham and West Ham are set to battle it out for the signature of Heidar Helguson despite interest from fellow Premiership rivals Sunderland and Wigan.

All four clubs are chasing the Watford striker but it is understood he has ruled out leaving the capital, paving the way for Fulham and West Ham to table firm offers.

The Iceland international, who has scored 64 goals since arriving at Vicarage Road in 2000, will make a decision about his future over the next week, though Fulham are the favourites to clinch a deal worth around £1million for the 27-year-old.

Manager Chris Coleman is anxious to add another striker to his squad, with Andy Cole almost certain to depart before Fulham report back for pre-season training.

The former England striker is keen to return north, where his family are based, and Blackburn remain the most likely suitors.

Meanwhile, Sam Parkin will take his time before deciding whether to accept Watford manager Adrian Boothroyd's offer to join the club.

Boothroyd spoke to the £500,000-rated striker this week but is facing competition from Norwich, Ipswich and Brighton for the 24-year-old.

"I'm hoping to speak to all parties," said Parkin. "I will not make a hasty decision. I've waited a long time for this opportunity."
