Fu leads at interval

Marco Fu was taking revenge for last year's first-round defeat by Martin Gould as he opened up a 6-3 lead in their re-match at the Betfred.com World Championship.

Paired again at the last-32 stage, former semi-finalist Fu dominated the opening session of their first-round match at the Crucible, and was in punishing form as the pair battled it out for the right to meet Judd Trump next.

Hong Kong cueman Fu, 33, who was runner-up to Ding Junhui at the Masters in January, had breaks of 70, 97, 81, 63, 115 and 56 as he surged ahead.

Fu stands 21st in the world rankings, just one place higher than 29-year-old Gould, who 12 months ago beat him 10-9 in the opening round before almost knocking out eventual champion Neil Robertson.

Gould led Robertson 11-5 but lost 13-12 in their 2010 second-round tussle, but today he left himself with an uphill struggle to reach round two again.

Fu built up a 4-1 lead, with Gould's only frame at that stage coming thanks to an 80 break in the third.

Pinner potter Gould managed to haul himself back to 4-3 as the match turned scrappy.

But then came Fu's excellent century, securing himself a lead to take into Wednesday's concluding session, and he was on top throughout the final frame to secure a three-frame cushion.
