French connection for Rangers

12 April 2012

Paul Le Guen will again face French opposition after Rangers were drawn against Auxerre in the UEFA Cup group stages.

The former Lyon boss will be hoping his intense knowledge of football in his homeland will enable him to mastermind a win over the Group A favourites.

The Ibrox club also face Partizan Belgrade, Livorno and Maccabi Haifa in the group stages of the tournament following Tuesday's draw in Nyon, Switzerland.

Rangers have failed to overcome Auxerre in three previous attempts in European competition.

The French club knocked Rangers out of the inaugural UEFA Cup group stages two years ago.

Alex McLeish's men needed a draw to qualify but suffered a 2-0 defeat.

The Ibrox club also lost to Auxerre in the Champions League back in 1996, when they crashed to a 2-1 defeat at home and away.
