Four-star England crush poor Greece

14 April 2012

Steve McClaren enjoyed the best opening night for an England coach in 60 years as new skipper John Terry led a four-goal rout of European Champions Greece.

Terry took just 15 minutes to nod home the first goal of McClaren's tenure as England burst free of their World Cup malaise in the perfect fashion.

Frank Lampard added a second, then Peter Crouch netted a brace before half-time as England's new coach celebrated the biggest win in a first game since Walter Winterbottom's side defeated Northern Ireland 7-2 in 1946.

Terry was given the captain's armband and promptly opened the scoring. The new captain leapt above Angelos Charisteas to head England in front in the 14th minute.

Lampard made it two on the half hour. He won the ball, deep in his own half, gave it to Jermain Defoe and charged forward.

Defoe's pass found him and Lampard enjoyed a stroke of luck as his shot clipped defender Paraskevas Antzas and looped over keeper Antonios Nikopolidis.

Lampard was close to his second within five minutes when he latched onto a low Stuart Downing cross but Nikopolidis saved and Crouch tapped in the rebound.

Crouch's second was equally simple, a near-post header from another pinpoint cross by Downing.
