Ex-Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali is set to replace Chase Carey as the new boss of Formula 1.

According to the BBC, team bosses have been informed of the appointment of the Italian, who fronted Ferrari’s F1 operation until 2014 and has been serving as chief executive for Lamborghini.

Carey is expected to step down as Formula 1 CEO at the end of the season but will remain in his other current post as chairman.

At one time, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff had been mooted as a possible successor but Wolf earlier this month said he would be staying put at the German manufacturer for the 2021 season.

It leaves the sport effectively now run next season by former Ferrari men: Jean Todt is the current FIA president while Ross Brawn is the managing director of motorsport at Formula 1.

The 55-year-old Domenicali guided Ferrari to the constructors’ championship in his first season in charge in 2008 and was at the helm until 2014 when he was replaced following a dispute with then Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo.

He switched to Audi before his current post with Lamborghini before agreeing a return to F1 after six years.
