Audi will enter Formula One in 2026 as the works team for Sauber, the German manufacturer has announced.

Following confirmed plans to build a power unit for the sport, on Wednesday Audi detailed plans to buy a stake in the Swiss team and provide their power units.

Sauber, currently racing as Alfa Romeo as part of a link-up with Ferrari, will continue to develop and manufacture the car, plus execute race weekends, while Audi will create the power unit.

“We are delighted to have gained such an experienced and competent partner for our ambitious F1 project,” says Oliver Hoffmann, Member of the Board for Technical Development at AUDI AG.

“We already know the Sauber Group with its state-of-the-art facility and experienced team from previous collaborations and are convinced that together we will form a strong team.”

Alfa Romeo currently sit sixth in the F1 Constructors’ Championship for 2022 with drivers Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou both signed up for next season.

“Audi is the best partner for the Sauber Group,” says Finn Rausing, Chairman of Sauber Holding.

“It is clear that both companies share the same values and vision. We are looking forward to achieving our common goals with a strong and successful partnership.”
