World Cup 2018: Fans face beer shortage as boozy supporters drink parts of Russia dry

Parts of Russia are struggling to cope with the demand for beer after an influx of football fans for the World Cup.

Some restaurants and bars have completely run out because they were expecting supporters to want other drinks and "not just beer".

One restaurant waiter told the New York Post his venue had run out of beer on Monday and was still waiting for more supplies.

“We just didn’t think they would only want beer,” the waiter, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of scaring off future customers, said.

In Kazan, Australian fans were drowning their sorrows after losing to France on Saturday.

The head bartender of Gudini Bar, told the Sydney Morning Herald: "Australian guys are like Russians; we are the same because we are drinking too much. In the morning, we didn't have any beer in the pub. All the beer was drunk.

"It was so busy, it was so much fun because a lot of Australian people came into our pub and drank all night. I don’t know exactly how many glasses of beer I poured last night but I think it was one million.”

Elsewhere there were reports that Swedish fans finished beer supplies in Nizhny Novgorod on Monday.

Martin Fredman, Swedish Football Association's head of security, told Sportbladet: “Yup, some places had already run out by yesterday. The city has never had to arrange something on this scale before, so they've been completely taken by surprise."

Nizhny Novgorod is set to receive even more tourists on Sunday when British fans are expected to swarm into the city to watch their team play Panama.
