Robert Green fired by three-way fight

In with a shout: Robert Green

Robert Green believes there is now a real three-way fight to be England's first-choice goalkeeper at the World Cup.

The 30-year-old started last night's friendly and made two great saves from Mexico's Carlos Vela to keep England in the game at half-time.

The West Ham keeper was replaced by Joe Hart at the interval, with David James rested after his exertions in the FA Cup Final.

Green said: "Each save that you make is important as a goalkeeper. Being able to make a save and being able to do what you can for the team is something you are there for and, thankfully, that happened for me.

"I have spent a long time with England not playing and being a very distant third choice. So to come in and to play games and to be involved in a three-way tussle and with everyone getting a chance is the main thing.

"It raises competition and expectations between each other and we are pushing each other on."
