The England women’s football team today hailed female World Cup pundits as “phenomenal role models” who would inspire other players to take up similar roles.

At this year’s tournament former Arsenal and England defender Alex Scott is a pundit for the BBC, while Juventus star Eniola Aluko, who played more than 100 times for England, is providing analysis for ITV.

Vicki Sparks became the first female commentator for a live televised World Cup match.

Current England players Jordan Nobbs and Alex Greenwood said hiring former Lionesses as pundits “should have happened years ago”.

Nobbs, 25, said: “Alex Scott has been a phenomenal role model for being able to have that career — she has been a major part of this World Cup.

“She has proven to people that if you know good facts about football, and you know what you are talking about, then you can be on that level. Hopefully what Alex has done will become more the norm — that if you are good enough for the job it doesn’t matter if you are male or female.”

Greenwood, 24, said: “What the girls out there, Eni and Alex, are doing in Russia is fantastic, they are a credit to themselves and women’s football.

"I think it [women commentators on men’s football] is something that needed to happen, it has been too late to come. It should have happened years ago.”
