Aaron Lennon will be a star, says Michael Dawson

10 April 2012

Michael Dawson has backed Aaron Lennon to become one of the stars of the World Cup.

The Tottenham winger was one of the few England players to impress in the 1-1 draw with USA last Saturday.

Lennon is among the fastest players at the tournament and has come into the competition full of confidence despite missing four months of the Premier League season through injury.

Dawson, speaking at the SOS Children's Village in Rustenburg where Spurs and the Football Association have provided funds to buy houses for orphans, feels there is a lot more to come from the 23-year-old.

"Aaron can take this tournament by storm," said the Spurs defender. "He is a top player. I've seen it on many occasions in training and playing with him. He is player of the highest class and if you give him the ball he will scare anyone."

Dawson is doing his utmost in training to convince manager Fabio Capello that he should replace injured club-mate Ledley King ahead of Jamie Carragher and Matthew Upson against Algeria on Friday. But the centre-back insists his fight to win a first cap has been put into perspective by his visit to the SOS Children's Village.

Fines collected from players late for training at Spurs were donated to the project and Dawson explained: "When you come here and see this, it's fantastic that the lads were late. It can help people.

"The FA have sponsored a house as well and each individual player at Tottenham has sponsored one child, so it's fantastic. We want to get as many people involved as we can to sponsor a child."
