Wolfsburg knocked Arsenal out of the Women’s Champions League after a 2-0 win on Thursday sealed a 3-1 aggregate victory in their quarter-final tie.

Arsenal had started slowly, perhaps not helped by the game being delayed by five minutes after the home fans’ pre-game confetti littered their own team’s box so significantly that groundsmen were called out with rakes and vacuums.

After just ten minutes, Jill Roord came back to haunt her old club by scoring with an improvised finish after the Gunners failed to clear a corner.

Wolfsburg dominated the opening stages and were narrowly denied another when the offside flag correctly denied Tabea Wassmuth her second goal of the tie.

Goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger made a smart save to deny Svenja Huth with an outstretched leg and the Gunners, just as in the first leg, went in at the break only a goal down and still in the tie.

Much improved in possession, Arsenal grew their confidence of replicating their first leg feat of leaving the teams level on aggregate as they squared off in front of a healthy crowd at Volkswagen Arena.

And yet, just as they built up a head of steam, the terrific Sveindis Jane Jonsdottir darted down the left for Wolfsburg and her cross was diverted into her own net by Leah Williamson.

Arsenal replied by hitting the woodwork twice in quick succession from a corner but it was not enough as they were denied a first Champions League semi-final appearance in nine years.
