Wojciech Szczesny has suggested he intends to remain at Roma next season rather than settle for a place on the Arsenal bench.

Szczesny was shipped out of Arsenal during the summer transfer window when Arsene Wenger chose to make David Ospina his backup to new signing Petr Cech.

However, with Ospina considering an Emirates departure having only appeared in League Cup and Champions League fixtures prior to Cech’s injury last month, it seems Wenger will be looking for a new backup to Cech.

The 25-year-old Szczesny, though, has enjoyed a season of regular first team football and suggested that would be his priority when he comes to consider his future at the end of the season.

“Will I stay at Roma? For me, football always comes first,” he said on Roma Radio. “I have the confidence of everyone here.

“When you have the trust of your teammates, the Coach and the fans, as well as playing every Sunday, then that can only be for the best.

“Obviously it’s not just thanks to me, but everyone who has helped me.”

Recent weeks have seen Szczesny play his part in a remarkable run of form for Roma under new coach Luciano Spalletti, who replaced Rudi Garcia in January.

Roma now sit in the third and final Champions League spot in Serie A, five points clear of Fiorentina and Inter Milan with just eight games remaining. Szczesny, who has not missed a game for the Gialorossi since November, hailed the impact his new manager has had on Roma’s top three bid.

“The Coach doesn’t accept mistakes on the pitch, off the pitch or in the dressing room,” he added. “That’s what makes him special and allowed us to change the inertia of our season.

“It allowed us to win eight consecutive games and draw against Inter. He’s a perfectionist who is making a difference.”
