Wigan defender Dan Burn saluted his team-mates and fans alike as the Latics made their way into to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after beating runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City at the DW Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s side felt aggrieved to have not only been held at half-time, but also a man down after Fabian Delph was given his marching orders for a high tackle on Max Power.

That decision then led to angry confrontations between the two sides both in the dugouts and in the tunnel at half-time.

The Latics managed to capitalise on a Kyle Walker error as Will Grigg stepped in and finished past Claudio Bravo in the City net with 11 minutes to go to set up a grandstand finish.

Burn was overjoyed speaking to reporters after the game, but admits City's late, desperate search for an equaliser left a few hearts in mouths at the DW.

“Once we scored the fans really got behind us, just knew we needed to hang on," Burn told BBC Sport.

"It was the longest 10 minutes of my life!

“Not sure how it feels, hasn’t sunk in yet. It was a really tough game.

“The belief was always there. We’ve got Will Grigg, who does what he keeps doing.”

Paul Cook’s men progressed into the next round of the Cup after having just 17 per cent of possession during the game.

Burn and his defensive teammates survived a barrage of late City pressure, with the defender saying that his side pride themselves on their defensive solidity.

“We pride ourselves on our clean sheets," he added. "We had a couple bad results before so we wanted to prove ourselves, so a clean sheet against the best team in England is great."
