Wigan Athletic's footballers have agreed to defer some of their wages during the coronavirus crisis, the Championship club confirmed on Thursday.

The Latics announced that first-team players and senior staff would be deferring a percentage of their salaries for the next three months in order to help the club navigate the financial challenges that have arisen as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak.

All elite football in England - including all three divisions of the EFL - is currently suspended indefinitely and the 2019-20 season will not resume until it is deemed safe to do so.

Wigan said that a number of staff across the club, the Wigan Athletic Community Trust and DW Stadium had been furloughed, with other members of senior non-playing staff agreeing to partial salary deferrals.

"Our staff and players have come together to support the organisation and that emphasises the quality of people we have at Wigan Athletic," said Latics executive chairman Darren Royle.

“We thank the players and all staff for their support in this challenging time."

Other Championship clubs to have agreed wage deferrals with players during the coronavirus shutdown thus far include Brentford and league leaders Leeds United.
