West Ham defender Winston Reid will miss New Zealand’s World Cup play-off against Mexico after damaging his ankle in training.

The club have not given a time for Reid’s return but he will also sit out Saturday’s match at Norwich.

West Ham had planned to pay £100,000 so that Reid (above) could play at Carrow Road and then take a private jet to New Zealand’s training camp in the United States.

The first leg is in Mexico City next Wednesday and the New Zealand captain is keen to go to the return in Wellington a week later.

He tweeted: “I’m devastated about missing the games with country and club but these things happen sometimes. Hopefully, will be there in NZ to support the boys!! Will do everything to get back ASAP.”

Coach Ricki Herbert said: “Losing your captain a week before a match of this magnitude is difficult but this is the nature of football.”
