Former West Ham left back Chris Powell has backed Aaron Cresswell to win a place in the England squad.

Cresswell has excelled following his move to the Boleyn Ground from Ipswich in the summer of 2014, starting every Premier League game since his arrival.

The 26-year-old was named Player's Player of the Year last term and was rewarded with a new five-year deal after just 12 months in east London.

England manager Roy Hodgson is yet to hand the full-back a senior international cap despite injury to Manchester United's Luke Shaw, but Powell believes it's only a matter of time before Cresswell is called into the England fold.

"He's a very, very good player," Said the former Charlton manager.

"The good thing about him is that he can defend. People with modern day full backs say 'Oh he's great going forward' and actually he is - but he can defend.

"As an ex-player and as a coach and manager you want your defenders to be able to defend because you won't have the ball all the time.

"He's a very, very clever signing. He's got a superb left foot and a great delivery.

"I feel he will get an England chance I really do. If he carries on the way he's been going i can definitely see him playing for England in the future."

Though Shaw is still in contention for Euro 2016 as he battles for fitness following a double leg break in September, Hodgson is looking at other left-back options for the finals this summer.

The England boss handed Danny Rose a first England cap last month and included Ryan Bertrand in his squad, but suggested Cresswell was some way down his pecking order when naming Kieran Gibbs and Leighton Baines among those he is considering.

Rose was particularly impressive during his international debut against Germany and built on that with a promising display against the Dutch three days later. But Powell thinks Cresswell should take heart from the Tottenham defender's rapid rise from the cusp of England contention to potential starter ahead of the summer finals in France.

He added: "Danny Rose has made a claim, which is great for London football and for him, because he's finally nailed down a consistent position in the Spurs team.

"Of course we have Ryan Bertrand and Luke Shaw is coming back, but I think Cresswell will get an opportunity somewhere along the line and that would be absolutely brilliant for him."
