David Moyes has credit in the bank at West Ham but pressure grows after £150m transfer spree

West Ham are backing David Moyes to drag the club out of their current slump, with no plans to replace the Scot during the World Cup break.

The Hammers suffered a fourth defeat in five Premier League matches when losing 2-0 to Leicester on Saturday and head into the break 16th in the table, just a point outside the relegation zone.

Moyes’ side have won just four League games all season - against newly-promoted Fulham and Bournemouth, and against Aston Villa and Wolves when both clubs were in turmoil - though they have excelled in Europe, winning a perfect six games out of six in the Europa Conference League group stage.

The poor start to the season has come off the back of a £150million summer spending spree but several of Moyes’ eight new signings are yet to make a significant impact and there have been growing signs of dissent at recent home games, with the team booed off following defeat to the Foxes.

As a result, Moyes is under pressure for the first time during his second spell at the club. The 59-year-old returned to the London Stadium in late-2019 and dragged the Irons clear of a relegation battle before two superb campaigns that resulted in sixth and seventh-placed finishes in the League, as well as last season’s run to the Europa League semi-finals.

For that reason, Moyes has credit in the bank and will be given time to right the ship before West Ham return to action away to Arsenal on Boxing Day.

Just five Hammers players - Declan Rice, Lucas Paqueta, Thilo Kehrer, Alphonse Areola and Nayef Aguerd - are due to be in action at the World Cup and Moyes is hopeful of using the break as a chance to reset after a disjointed start to the season in August.
