West Ham want to upset big six order in the long term but we have a way to go, says David Moyes

David Moyes wants to upset the big six over the long term, but knows West Ham have a way to go before then.

The Hammers finished sixth in the Premier League last season, three points ahead of Sunday's opponents Tottenham who they can leap frog back into the European places with a win this weekend.

West Ham come into the game off the back of Europa League victory over Genk while Spurs's second string lost 1-0 at Vitesse Arnhem in the third-tier Europa Conference League, a competition Moyes was not keen on finding himself in this season.

Moyes and his side upset the London pecking order last season but are still seen by many to be punching above their weight, something the Scot wants to change over time with a sustained presence in Europe.

"We've got a bit to go yet before we should get all the plaudits and recognition. We've had one season at it," said Moyes.

"I need to try and get consistency at West Ham, I'd like to try and qualify for European football again if we can.

"There is a task, because there's so many good teams in the Premier League at the moment and Tottenham are one of them. So we have a lot to prove yet before we get lots of plaudits but the only plaudits I would give is to say that the players here are doing such a good job. Great spirit amongst them, they go into every game with a level of confidence and self belief that we think we can go and win.

"So from that point of view, we'll keep trying it and we'll keep trying to push on and get results."

West Ham are looking to go three league games without defeat against Tottenham for the first time in more than 15 years this weekend.

Loanee Jesse Lingard stole the show in a 2-1 victory for the Hammers at the London Stadium. While Moyes wanted to see the England international return this season a move never got off the ground and West Ham brought Nikola Vlasic in instead.

They have kicked on without Lingard so far this term but Moyes knows they may need to invest again in January to keep their foot on the gas.

"Jesse was incredible for us last year, he gave us something different in the second half of the season, helped win us a lot of games and a lot of points, so we'll always be grateful to Jesse for that," said Moyes.

"But I actually think that we've got a really good team here. I think we've got a good group of players and I don't think it would be ever about any individual player and I hope that Jesse would probably look back and say that the players I played with helped me and made my job easy.

"But we'll just try to keep growing and we'll try to get better. We know we've still got a long way to go.

"But maybe in January, we might need to find, that we have to find another Jesse Lingard if we can, we might need to add again, to keep it going. But at the moment. I think the momentum we've had from the end of last season, even through preseason into just now, and the players are showing it and we want to keep it going, keep the levels up. So I hope that we can do that in the coming months."
