Angelo Ogbonna has vowed to return as soon as possible to help West Ham in a "truly special year" after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The Italian defender underwent a scan on his right knee on Monday after an uncomfortable turn during Sunday's win over Liverpool, with the results showing damage to his ACL.

West Ham have confirmed that the 33-year-old will see another specialist this week to ascertain the full extent of the damage. If surgery is required, the former Juventus defender is highly unlikely to play again this season. Should that be the case, West Ham could take up the one-year option to extend his contract as a sign of support, with Ogbonna’s current deal set to expire next summer.

After confirmation of the news this morning, Ogbonna took to Twitter and said: "Unfortunately my knee forces me to take a break and return asap to fight with you.

"Of course I am devastated I can't continue our battle from the field, but, as a fighter, I’ll be back and till my return I’ll be supporting the team in this truly special year.

"See you soon guys."

Teammate Declan Rice sent his own message of support, saying: "We are all with you brother!

"The fact you even carried on for a couple of minutes shows the type of character you are. Big love Oggy."
