We won't tolerate abusive Emmanuel Adebayor chants, say Spurs

11 April 2012

Tottenham have warned their supporters not to start any abusive chants during Wednesday's Champions League tie against Real Madrid.

Spurs fans were criticised by Real striker Emmanuel Adebayor after last week's quarter-final first leg in Spain because of offensive taunts aimed at the former Arsenal striker, an attack the club stressed was not racist.

But in a message published on their website today, Spurs took the step of urging their fans against such behaviour. It read: "A reminder to all fans that foul, abusive, homophobic or racist language will not be tolerated at White Hart Lane and that stewards will take action against anyone heard using such language.

"If you hear anyone within White Hart Lane using this language please report this to the club by texting the control room.

"The texting service is unique at White Hart Lane and has been used to good effect in enabling us to ban people for committing offences on matchdays. You do not have to put up with mindless supporters who are intent on ruining your day, so use the system, report the individuals and let us take it from there."

Meanwhile, Aaron Lennon took part in training today and could return for Wednesday's second leg.

The winger was not involved in Saturday's 3-2 win over Stoke at White Hart Lane because of the virus that ruled him out of the first leg of the quarter-final game at the Bernabeu last week.
