Wayne Rooney has tested negative for coronavirus but says he is "angry and disappointed" that he will have to miss Derby County games due to being in isolation.

Rooney was quickly tested after he was visited by a friend who had been contacted by NHS Test and Trace before dropping off a watch for the former England captain and subsequently tested positive himself.

Rooney was unaware of any Covid-19 issues and played for Derby in their defeat to Watford on Friday night.

Manchester United's all-time top scorer has since tested negative but as a contact of someone who has tested positive, he will still need to self-isolate as a precaution.

"Just received the news that my covid-19 test has shown I do not have the virus," Rooney said on Twitter.

"Delighted for myself and family but obviously angry and disappointed that I now have to self-isolate and miss vital games for dcfcofficial."

Derby face Huddersfield on Tuesday night before visiting rivals Nottingham Forest on Friday and manager Phillip Cocu said: "It’s a setback when he’s not available for at least the next three games when we have players coming back from injury. His fitness levels were getting back to a good level and he was improving the team."
