Wayne Rooney: I’ll lead us to glory in 2018 World Cup

Forward planning: Wayne Rooney wants to captain England in 2018
11 April 2012

Wayne Rooney has revealed that he is desperate to captain his nation to World Cup glory at Wembley

England remain strong contenders to host the tournament in nine years' time and Rooney is determined to play a central role.

"Hopefully, I will still be playing then and it would be great to play in my home country. If I'm captain, that would be even better," said the Manchester United striker, who will be 32 years old when the 2018 World Cup begins.

He added: "It would be amazing. The last tournament here was Euro 96 and I was only 11 then, a bit too young to appreciate it.

"You see what London 2012 has done for kids getting into sport and I'm sure that the World Cup here would get even more young kids playing the game, which can only be a good thing."

Meanwhile, England are virtually guaranteed a top seeding for qualifying for Euro 2012 even though they did not reach the finals of the last tournament.

UEFA have released interim seedings for the draw, which will be held in Warsaw on 7 February.

Results from the World Cup qualifiers are one of the factors UEFA have used to rank the teams.

And, while there are still some matches to be played, England's current position of fifth should ensure Fabio Capello's men get a favourable seeding among the nine groups.
