Wayne Rooney will not be punished for allegedly drinking alcohol after England's win over Scotland on Saturday.

It has been reported that the Manchester United striker was slurring his words after drinking red wine and beer on Saturday night while wearing England kit at The Grove Hotel in Watford, which is where the team are based.

The incident, in which The Sun also claim Rooney ‘gatecrashed a wedding party’, took place 24 hours after England beat Scotland 3-0 and a day before the squad resumed training to prepare tonight’s friendly against Spain.

Rooney will not be involved in the fixture after returning to Manchester United last night due to a minor knee injury.

The timing of his departure has led to suspicions that the 31-year-old has been disciplined by manager Gareth Southgate.

But it is understood that Rooney, along with the rest of the players, had been given the day off on Saturday and didn’t break any rules by having a drink.

The incident has not affected his chances of being called up for international duty in the future. England’s next matches are against Germany and Lithuania in March.

The FA may decide to consider tightening up guidelines on how much alcohol a player can consume while given time off from England duty, but they remain calm about the situation.

An FA spokeswoman said: “They were given time off over the weekend and didn’t report back until Sunday afternoon.”
