Watford vs Tottenham team news: Toby Alderweireld returns for Mauricio Pochettino's side

Toby Alderweireld has been included in Tottenham's starting line up for this afternoon's Premier League clash against Watford.

The Belgian defender missed Wednesday's victory over Southampton due to a virus but has recovered to take his place alongside Kevin Wimmer and Eric Dier in Mauricio Pochettino's three-man defence.

Alderweireld's return is a timely one for Spurs, who have to make do without suspended duo Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Walker at Vicarage Road.

Kieran Trippier has come into the side at wing back while Victor Wanyama is set to be the sole holding midfielder.

The Hornets, meanwhile, initially opted to drop Odion Ighalo, who has struggled for form in form of goal this season.

But the Nigerian striker was reinstated after Juan Camilo Zuniga suffered an injury during the warm up.

Spurs are currently one point outside of the top four and could climb into the Champions League places - albeit temporarily - with victory versus Walter Mazzarri's side.

Watford have failed to win any of their last three top-flight games but will move into the top half of the table with a positive result this afternoon.

Tottenham XI: Lloris (C), Trippier, Alderweireld, Wimmer, Rose, Dier, Wanyama, Eriksen, Dele, Son, Kane.

Tottenham subs: Vorm, Carter-Vickers, Davies, Dembele, Winks, Sissoko, Janssen.

Watford XI: Gomes; Kaboul, Prodl, Cathcart; Capoue, Guedioura, Holebas; Amrabat, Doucoure; Deeney (C), Ighalo.

Watford subs: Pantilimon, Sinclair, Folivi, Kabasele, Mason, Stewart, Rowan.

What they're saying

Mauricio Pochettino: “Maybe I repeat the same thing but it’s always difficult to play in the Premier League and we expect another tough game.

"It’s like a London derby again and Watford are strong, powerful and they have a clear idea of how they want to play.

“I think we feel strong and we want to keep going, to try to improve and we know we need to be ready.”

Walter Mazzarri: "We will try to get some players in as soon as possible. January is very difficult, you need to think of not getting players for only a few months, but also about the future.

"The club knows what to do and we will try to do it as soon as possible."
