Watford transfer news: Jose Holebas attracting interest from Marseille

Wanted: Hornets left back

Marseille are interested in signing Watford left-back Jose Holebas.

The 31-year-old only joined the club from Roma in July in a £1.8million move but reports soon surfaced that he was unhappy at the switch and has since fallen behind Chelsea loanee Nathan Ake in the pecking order at Vicarage Road.

Marseille coach Michel worked with Holebas during their time together at Olympaicos and is keen to rekindle that relationship but Standard Sport understands Holebas’ wages are a stumbling block.

It is believed Holebas currently earns in excess of £30,000-a-week and that figure is deemed too high by the Ligue 1 club. They are willing to consider a loan deal but are yet to make a formal approach.

Holebas kept Ashley Cole out of Roma’s first team for large parts of last season and revealed his disappointment at moving to England, claiming the transfer had been agreed without his knowledge.

“It was not my decision [to join], now I have to live with that,” he said in September. Holebas started the season as Quique Sanchez Flores’ first-choice but has only made five starts for the club - one more outing than for Greece this season.

He did start games against Chelsea and Manchester City over the festive period but could be open to a move if Watford indicate a willingness to do business.
