Watford are weighing up a move for former Manchester United forward Federico Macheda after taking him on trial.

The 25-year-old Italian has been without a club since leaving Cardiff last summer. He scored a penalty for Watford Under-23s in Tuesday’s 4-2 loss at Hull.

Macheda, who would provide cover for Troy Deeney, Odion Ighalo and Isaac Success, can sign outside the transfer window because he is a free agent.

Meanwhile, Watford manager Walter Mazzarri faces a defensive headache for the game against Bournemouth tomorrow.

Craig Cathcart is out of the match at Vicarage Road with a groin injury which forced him off at half-time of Monday’s 2-0 defeat at Burnley. Fellow centre-half Miguel Britos, meanwhile, is struggling with a groin problem.

On the plus side for Watford, defender Sebastian Prodl is fit and Younes Kaboul is likely to start at the back. Christian Kabasele is also in contention for a defensive berth.
