Watford head coach Marco Silva has spoken to Troy Deeney about his poor disciplinary record.

Deeney was sent off for a late tackle against Huddersfield last weekend and has been given a four-match suspension after losing an appeal against the card.

The Watford captain, who was also given a three-match retrospective ban in October after an altercation with Stoke’s Joe Allen, is banned for Saturday’s trip to Brighton and will also miss the matches against Leicester, Swansea and Manchester City.

Silva had talks with Deeney this week and said: “Troy is an honest player who gives everything every time to help the team. What I tell him will stay between us, our squad, and inside our club.”

Four Watford players have received red cards this season but Silva said: “Our team is a fair one which tries to compete and play in the normal way. Some things happen in the moment.”

Watford are without a win in five games but Silva does not fear for his job. “The Premier League is not only the past five games,” he said.

Tom Cleverley is back from suspension, while Silva hopes fellow midfielder Will Hughes will return after being sidelined with a hamstring injury.
