Vodafone closing in on £20m naming rights deal for West Ham's London Stadium

James Benge5 April 2017

Vodafone are in advanced negotiations with the owners of the London Stadium, home to West Ham, over naming rights.

While no deal is yet in place it is understood that a six-year deal worth in the region of £20million could be announced between London E20 Stadium and the telecoms firm within the coming months.

No deal is expected to be in place before the end of the season but it is likely that the London Stadium will have a new name when West Ham appear in it for the first time in the 2018/19 campaign, with a new sponsor likely to be in place in time for the World Athletics Championships in August.

Indian manufacturing giant Mahindra had been in talks with London E20 Stadium, the company set up by owners the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) to manage the ground, whose main tenants have been West Ham since the start of this season.

How much West Ham will stand to earn from the London Stadium naming rights remains to be seen. The club’s agreement with its landlords sees the first £4million per annum go to the owners with subsequent earnings shared 50:50 between the two parties.

It seems likely that the vast majority of revenue will go to the LLDC.

The stadium, which has cost over £700m of taxpayer money, is the subject of a review into its cost by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.

The findings of this report are expected to be published in the summer.
