Vincent Janssen has scored his first goal for Tottenham after netting in the club's EFL Cup third-round tie against Gillingham on Wednesday night.

The 22-year-old was handed his second start of the season, and his sixth appearance in all competitions, at White Hart Lane after first-choice Spurs striker Harry Kane was ruled out of action for a number of weeks with an ankle injury sustained at the weekend.

Christian Eriksen put Spurs 2-0 ahead against Gillingham before Janssen netted his first goal for the north Londoners with his well-taken penalty in the 51st minute.

Despite having limited game time for Tottenham since joining from AZ Alkmaar in the summer, Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino revealed Janssen would need time to adapt to the north Londoners' style of play - but that he did feature in his plans at the club.

"There is scope for him to play more from the start. Janssen is a good profile for us," Pochettino said of Janssen this week.

"He’s a fighter, the mentality is fantastic and fits very well with us in the team. Only he needs time to adapt his game to the team."
