England sporting director Franco Baldini revealed today that he met with former Porto coach Andre Villas-Boas earlier this summer, with a view to him possibly becoming the new Roma boss.

Villas-Boas signed for Chelsea last month but Baldini, who has agreed to become general manager of the Serie A club at the end of England's Euro 2012 qualification campaign in October, had targeted the young coach to take over from Vincenzo Montella.

"I had dinner with Villas-Boas," Baldini told La Repubblica. "I immediately felt a good rapport but Villas-Boas was too expensive."

Baldini, who says he has yet to sign a contract with Roma, stated he was responsible for bringing former Barcelona B boss Luis Enrique in as Roma's new coach.

He said: "I wanted someone foreign from Italian football.

"Someone that was not contaminated. Luis Enrique is very motivated."
