Tottenham are waiting anxiously on the fitness of Victor Wanyama after the midfielder suffered a recurrence of knee problem in training here in Los Angeles.

Wanyama suffered a knee injury on last summer's US tour and, after playing in their opening two games of the season, he was ruled out for four months – only returning in January.

The same knee flared up in training on Tuesday evening and he missed Spurs' 4-1 win over Roma in San Diego on Wednesday.

Club sources insist the decision was just precautionary and not a serious issues, but Wanyama will be assessed on Thursday ahead of their next International Champions Cup friendly against Barcelona in LA on Sunday.

Any sort of setback for the Kenya international would be a significant blow to Spurs, who have travelled to the US without midfielders Harry Winks, Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier.

Winks has continued his rehabilitation from ankle surgery in London and he remains unlikely to be fit for Spurs' Premier League opener at Newcastle on August 11, while losing World Cup semi-finalists Dier and Dembele are on holiday and not expected to return until early August.

As it stands, Dembele is expected to leave the club before the close on the transfer window on August 9 after entering the final year of his contract.

Luke Amos, who spent last season on loan at Stevenage, started the win over Roma at the SDCCU Stadium but Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino played down comparisons between the 21-year-old midfielder and Ryan Mason, who broke into his team aged 23 back in 2014-15.

"I don’t want to say there is a similarity with the feeling I got with Ryan," the Spurs manager said of Amos. "But Luke played very well and he still needs to work hard. I thought he and all our midfielders who came on the pitch showed an amazing energy.

"I am so happy we have these types of players who are always willing to work so hard and keep running. Luke has a lot of quality. He needs to work hard to find the opportunity to play. But I am so proud of his performance and that of all our midfielders."
