Anthony Martial explains what ‘big-time’ Raphael Varane will bring to Manchester United

Anthony Martial has backed Manchester United’s “big-time” Raphael Varane to adapt quickly to life at Old Trafford and take the club to the next level.

United secured one of the deals of the summer transfer window by signing World Cup winner Varane from Real Madrid in a deal worth up to £42million.

Along with £73m Jadon Sancho, Varane brings more star quality to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad as United bid to mount a serious Premier League title challenge this season.

The French centre-back will be expected to hit the ground running in Manchester, and his compatriot Martial knows Varane has the talent and temperament to succeed.

"Varane, I know already, of course," he told United’s website. "And the skillset he has, I know he will bring a lot to our team, in addition to his long experience, so we are all really delighted with these two new players we have."

"Varane is a big-time player. I don't think he will need too much time to adapt to his new environment, but I'm there for him for whatever little help or advice he may need.

"He has all his experience - he's a player who has won a lot during the time of his career at Real Madrid and also in the French national team, so I am sure he will bring all his powers, as he really is a top player and I know things are going to go well for him here at United."

While Victor Lindelof has started the season as first-choice alongside captain Harry Maguire, Varane will be expected to form a key partnership with the skipper.

Maguire said of Varane: "He’s an exceptional player and he’s proven that over numerous years now and with the trophies he’s won,” Maguire explained.

"He’s a real leader, a winner and to bring him into our defensive unit is really important for options and for competition to make everyone around him improve.

"We have some excellent defenders at this club and he’s coming into that. We have great international players and it’s only going to be a plus for a team. He’s an exceptional player."
