Thomas Tuchel given one-match touchline ban for confrontation with Antonio Conte in Chelsea-Tottenham clash

Thomas Tuchel has been given a touchline ban but Antonio Conte has escaped that punishment for the pair’s confrontation at Stamford Bridge.

The two managers clashed both during and after Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham last weekend, resulting in referee Anthony Taylor showing a red card to the two of them after the full-time whistle.

Tuchel has been fined £35,000 and given a one-match touchline ban for his role in the ill-tempered scenes, with Conte given a £15,000 fine and no ban.

“Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte admitted that their behaviour after the final whistle of the Premier League game between Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC on Sunday 14 August 2022 was improper, and both managers requested a paper hearing,” an FA spokesperson said.

“These sanctions are subject to appeal, and Thomas Tuchel’s one match touchline ban has been suspended temporarily pending the independent Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for its decisions that will be made available in due course.”

It means Tuchel will still be able to take his place in the dugout this weekend, as Chelsea travel to face Leeds. That will frustrate Jesse Marsch, with the Leeds boss stating he would be “disappointed” if Tuchel was allowed to to be on the bench following his red card.

The Chelsea boss has made it clear he does not look back on his clash with Conte and see it as a big deal, and insisted he has no ill-feeling towards the Italian.

Tuchel said in his press conference on Friday: “I think it was passion between two men who fought for their team. It was not more. I hope they don’t make more out of it. Of course in the context, a hair pulling two minutes before.

“It’s not that big of a deal, for me. It was about passion and nothing more. He was fighting for his team, I was fighting for my team. As you hopefully felt before we played Tottenham last season with Conte, and now, I have nothing but biggest respect for him and this will not change because of that incident.”
