Tottenham are highly unlikely to let Ben Davies leave the club this month despite interest from Crystal Palace.

Palace boss Sam Allardyce is a huge admirer of the Wales international and is trying to improve his defence as he tries to keep his team in the Premier League.

Yet the injury to Jan Vertonghen – who will be out of action for at least six weeks – against West Brom has made Davies suddenly more important to Spurs.

Vertonghen’s damaged ankle ligaments mean Davies may have a chance to play on the left of the back three if Tottenham stick with the 3-4-2-1 system at Manchester City on Saturday. Even if Kevin Wimmer is given the nod, Davies would still be understudy to Danny Rose at left-back.

With the Europa League returning next month with a last-32 tie against Belgian club Ghent, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is likely to make full use of his squad, and would be reluctant to let Davies leave under such circumstances.

The same is true of Kevin Wimmer, according to his agent. Standard Sport revealed last month that Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg had been following the centre-back’s progress, along with Southampton.
