Transfer news: Dimitar Berbatov in line for Tottenham return - if Lewis Holtby and Etienne Capoue leave

Tottenham are keen to move Lewis Holtby and Etienne Capoue out of White Hart Lane before adding new players ahead of tomorrow’s deadline.

Holtby, who is thought to be resigned to leaving before tomorrow, had attracted interest from his native Germany but Standard Sport understands the midfielder is more likely to remain in the Premier League. A loan deal with Fulham, until the end of the season, is a possibility, which could pave the way for Dimitar Berbatov to return to Spurs.

Chairman Daniel Levy is keen to clear space on the wage bill before turning his attention to new signings. A cut-price 18-month deal for Berbatov, whose agent, Emil Dantchev, admitted last month was unhappy at Fulham, appears a likely option as the clock ticks down. Finding a solution for Capoue might be more difficult because he arrived only last summer for £9million.

Head coach Tim Sherwood has said he is happy with the squad as it is. Yet Levy is traditionally active on transfer deadline day, with Liverpool suspecting that he may try to beat them to their principal target, Ukraine winger Yevhen Konoplyanka.

Liverpool are thought to have held talks with Konoplyanka’s club, Dnipro, but the player’s father has claimed another English club are interested.

“When writing about the interest from Liverpool, these people only know part of the truth,” said Oleg Konoplyanka. “Yesterday, I had a long and productive conversation with the chairman of another English club.
