Tottenham defender Danny Rose has undergone knee surgery and will not return to first-team action until next season, the Premier League club has confirmed.

Rose has not played for Mauricio Pochettino's side since damaging medial ligaments in his knee in the 0-0 draw at Sunderland on January 31.

At the time, the England international was expected to be ruled out for only a month but the injury has proven to be more problematic than originally envisaged.

Rose returned to first-team training last week but has opted to undergo surgery to fully rectify the injury ahead of the start of the 2017/18 campaign.

A Spurs statement read: "We can confirm that Danny Rose has undergone exploratory surgery on his left knee today.

"He recently returned to training, however the problem has not resolved fully therefore a decision has been made to proceed to surgery.

"He will now return to action next season."

Rose has therefore been ruled out of Tottenham's final two fixtures of the season, meaning he will have missed a total of 21 games since picking up the injury.

Ben Davies has deputised admirably during his absence but Rose is a key figure in Pochettino's defence and offers significantly more attacking threat than the Welshman.
