Ayoze Perez congratulated Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris for preventing Newcastle United from earning a famous win at Wembley on Saturday.

Fresh off the back of beating champions Manchester City on Tuesday night, Newcastle proved stubborn opposition for Spurs as they sat back and defended deep.

The visitors had few chances in front of goal, but one fell to Perez in the 68th minute when the forward drifted into space and unleashed a goal-bound shot which Lloris acrobatically tipped over the bar.

Heung-min Son went on to score a late winner to deny Newcastle a point in a game that looked destined to end goalless and, after the match, Perez revealed he spoke to Lloris about his save.

"I am very disappointed. We could have got a draw at least over here," the 25-year-old told Standard Sport.

"After the win against Man City, we could have got a result but, in the end, we couldn't.

"Definitely [Newcastle came to win]. We know they are a very good team, they play very good football, they push you and force you to be in those positions.

"We knew we would have chances and we did, [but] we didn't score. If you don't score against this kind of team, it's not easy to get something."

When then asked about Lloris' save to deny him a goal, Perez said: "Yeah, he made a good save. I told him after the game that.

"Also [Salomon] Rondon hit the post, we had a couple of chances but, no points today. We must carry on and get some coming up."

Newcastle next play Wolves away before hosting rock-bottom Huddersfield and Burnley - games Perez insists the Magpies can win to avoid the drop this term.

"We are confident we can get results against those types of teams," he added. "These are the types of game we need to win, and pick up points [from] as soon as possible."
