Tottenham will be able to play five more games at an increased capacity of 62,000 at Wembley this season, amid uncertainty over when they will move to their new £1billion stadium.

The agreement between the FA and Brent Council also means that Spurs will be able to play Champions League matches in front of a 90,000-capacity crowd, with the home leg of their last-16 tie against Borussia Dortmund taking place on February 13.

Tottenham hope to update fans by the end of the month on progress at their new ground.

A statement on the club’s website read: “Wembley National Stadium Limited [WNSL]’s planning application for a variation on the 51,000 cap at Wembley Stadium — as a contingency measure in the event we require them — to host five domestic fixtures at a capped capacity of 62,000 and any additional Champions League home fixtures at the full 90,000 capacity was approved by Brent Council’s Planning Committee [last night].

“Premier League home games that we have already announced ticketing details for [Watford, Newcastle United and Leicester City] will remain capped at 51,000.
