Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has been dealt a blow after Juan Foyth was ruled out until September through injury.

The 21-year-old was stretchered off during the 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich in last week's Audi Cup final win and has sustained a lateral ligament injury to his left ankle.

It was feared the defender would miss opening weeks of the Premier League season and the north London club confirmed on Monday that Foyth will not return to training until September.

Foyth was already suspended for the first two games of the season following his red card against Bournemouth at the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

The centre-back, who delayed his honeymoon to return to training early after his involvement in Copa America, was utilised as a right-back in pre-season.

But his injury leaves Pochettino with only one fit senior right-back in Kyle Walker-Peters, after allowing Kieran Trippier to join Atletico Madrid earlier this summer.

Tottenham face Aston Villa on Saturday at home in their Premier League opener before travelling to Manchester City a week later.
