Erik Lamela will play again for Tottenham and will be shown all the “love” he needs by Tottenham, insists manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Lamela will undergo surgery on a hip injury in Barcelona on Saturday that he hopes will allow him to be at full fitness again at the start of next season.

Lamela’s last game for Spurs was the 2-1 defeat at Liverpool in the EFL Cup on October 25. Since then, he has had family matters to deal with in Argentina, and has also spent time working with physios at his former club Roma.

“Now it is important to give him all the support and all the love,” said Pochettino. “Now it is not about the player. It is about the human and we will try to help him. He has been suffering a lot in the last four months.

“Now we have had a decision it is important for him to believe he can fix the problem. He wants to be on the pitch as soon as possible and that is what we want, too.

“Can he play again for Tottenham? Yes, of course. He is very young and this situation has allowed everyone to speak about different things, but we know very well what is happening and so does he.

“It is a problem in his hip that we have tried to fix in different ways. We have been very conservative but it was impossible to resolve the problem. We hope that the operation will help him do that and that he will be with us again as soon as possible to start his recovery.”

Lamela was Spurs’ record signing when he moved from Roma for £30million in summer 2013. He signed a five-year deal with an option for a sixth year.
