England’s U19s have booked their place in the European Under-19 Championships by defeating reigning champions Spain 2-0, with Tottenham prospect Joshua Onomah getting on the scoresheet.
Onomah opened the scoring in the Spanish town of Lepe after just six minutes thanks to an assist from Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham.
For much of the game Spain looked the better side, notching up twice as many shots as their opponents, but the hosts failed to beat Newcastle’s Freddie Woodman.
In the second half Coventry hitman Adam Armstrong came off the bench to put the game beyond doubt after 66 minutes.
The match was must-win for the The Young Lions having defeated Georgia and drawn with Greece last week.
Many of the present U19 team, including goalscorer Onomah, were involved in the U17 side that won the Euros two years ago, giving rise to hopes they can contend for honours again in Germany this July.
Onomah has made an impact this season as part of Tottenham’s title push. The 18-year-old has appeared 18 times for the senior squad and received his first senior start in the Europa League round of 16 first leg defeat to Borussia Dortmund.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has previously gone on record to praise the youngster’s potential and rewarded him with a new contract in February which will keep him at White Hart Lane until 2020.
Speaking in December Pochettino said: “It is impossible to set the limit for him as he is 18 and is very strong. His quality is amazing and he only needs to work hard and then he'll be fine.
“He is a special boy, a special player.”
