Tottenham will play Monaco in first Champions League game at Wembley

Tottenham's first Champions League game at Wembley will be against Monaco on Wednesday 14 September after Mauricio Pochettino's side learned their group stage opponents in this afternoon's draw.

Spurs have only competed in the tournament once before and will be keen to make a positive impression when they rub shoulders with Europe's elite.

This season will be Tottenham's last at White Hart Lane and work has already begun on their new stadium, which means they will stage their European home games at England's national ground after agreeing a deal to do so with the FA.

Pochettino's side could be cheered on by crowds of up to 90,000 as the stadium's full capacity will be used when Spurs welcome their European rivals to north London.

Christian Eriksen has moved to dispel fears that playing at a temporary home could harm Tottenham's chances of progression by insisting the large Wembley pitch will suit Pochettino's brand of football.

Spurs will also host Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday 2 November and CSKA Moscow on Wednesday 7 December at Wembley while their agreement with the FA also extends to the latter stages of the competition, should they progress.

Tottenham plan to be in their new £400m stadium in time for the 2018/19 campaign, which is set to make them London's biggest club courtesy of a capacity of 61,000.
