Tottenham to assess Harry Kane injury over next 48 hours as Eric Dier bemoans striking setback

Tottenham need Harry Kane back as quickly as possible, says Eric Dier, amid fears the striker could be out for the rest of the season.

Kane left White Hart Lane on crutches and with his foot in a protective boot after turning his ankle during the 6-0 FA Cup win over Millwall.

Spurs will have the injury assessed over the next 48 hours as they need swelling around his right ankle to go down before the full extent of the injury can be determined.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino fears Kane has suffered a recurrence of the injury that saw him sidelined for seven weeks earlier this season.

Kane suffered ankle ligament damage against Sunderland in September and his new injury is a huge blow for Spurs in their fight to finish in the top four and end their nine-year wait for a trophy.

The 23-year-old has been in outstanding form and is the joint top scorer in the Premier League this season with 19 goals.

Tottenham have relied heavily on Kane’s goals and although his team-mate Dier is well aware of the striker’s importance to the team, he is confident the club can cope without him.

“We are all very disappointed for Harry and hopefully he gets back as quickly as possible because he is very important for us,” said Dier. “He is a big part of this team in many ways, so hopefully he is fit as soon as possible. But we have got a very good squad and we are on a good run. We are playing well at the moment. As a team we can keep improving and keep this run going.”

Tottenham will hope Heung-Min Son continues his goalscoring form after he netted a hat-trick against Millwall yesterday as Spurs booked their place in the FA Cup semi-finals.

Vincent Janssen also scored his first goal from open play since his move from AZ Alkmaar last summer — his previous four had all come from the penalty spot — but there is no denying losing Kane represents a sizeable blow for Tottenham.

Dier said: “It was great that Sonny got a hat-trick and Vincent scored. Those are all positive signs and now, hopefully, they will step up. There are not many people in the world of football who can replace Harry but it is a chance for someone else to step up and, hopefully, everyone will — not just the strikers but the whole team. I hope everyone can pull their weight and we can keep going forward.”

The injury is also a blow for England manager Gareth Southgate, who will be without Kane for the friendly against Germany in Dortmund in nine days’ time and the World Cup qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley four days later.

Striker Kane has yet to appear for the national team since Southgate took over the reins from Sam Allardyce last September.
