Tottenham’s Mousa Dembele: Toby Alderweireld should have been nominated for the PFA Player of the Year

Toby Alderweireld should have been nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award, insists team-mate Mousa Dembele.

The Tottenham defender did not make the list despite playing in every League game this season and producing outstanding performances.

Harry Kane is a contender for the main prize and Dele Alli is in the running to be Young Player of the Year, but Dembele feels Alderweireld ought to to be there.

“He is an amazing player and he is very important for us,” said Dembele. “I don’t know how it happens and it’s not my concern but to me he deserves it.”

Kane and Alli may not attend the ceremony on Sunday as it takes place 24 hours before Tottenham face West Brom at home.

The pair will hold talks with boss Mauricio Pochettino before a decision is made.

Kane is up against Leicester trio Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante along with Mesut Ozil and Dimitri Payet.

Alli is the favourite in his category but still faces stern competition, particularly from Romelu Lukaku, Philippe Coutinho and Kane himself.
