Tottenham player ratings vs Forest: Kane has eyes on the World Cup while Spence raises real question

Nick Purewal10 November 2022

Tottenham slipped out of the Carabao Cup with a miserable 2-0 third-round defeat at Nottingham Forest.

Harry Kane at least avoided injury with England’s World Cup in mind, but this was a forgettable Spurs showing.

Nick Purewal was at the City Ground to rate the Spurs players:

Fraser Forster 8

Kept Spurs in the contest in the first-half with a string of fine saves.

Matt Doherty 4

Endured a wretched night with his error leading directly to Forest’s first goal.

Davinson Sanchez 5

Failed to impose himself in a defensive line devoid of leadership or direction.

Eric Dier 4

Looked off the pace, tentative and was caught upfield for Forest’s second goal.

Clement Lenglet 4

Part of a miserable defensive showing from Spurs.

Ryan Sessegnon 5

Always an outlet with his pace but failed to make that count.

Oliver Skipp 4

Not nearly busy enough, especially in terms of movement off the ball.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg 5

Spurs’ midfield was way too flat and square, with Hojbjerg as culpable as anyone else.

Yves Bissouma 7

The pick of a poor bunch, probing on the ball, pressing off it.

Ivan Perisic 5

A very quiet night from an experienced stager who surely knows better

Harry Kane (capt) 5

Had his eyes quite clearly on the World Cup. Perhaps the only man who could be excused given his usual quality.

Substitutes:

Rodrigo Bentancur (Hojbjerg 45) 6

Tried to inject energy and inspiration but could not spark Spurs.

Richarlison (Kane 59) 5

Looked rusty as he steps up return after injury.

Bryan Gil (Skipp 59) 5

Sent in to add pace and dynamism but failed to drag Spurs back into proceedings.

Dejan Kulusevski (Perisic 59) 5

Another to struggle to hit the pace of the night as Forest dominated.

Djed Spence (Doherty 65) 6

Kept himself busy and did enough to raise the genuine question of why he did not start.

Subs not used: Lloris, Emerson Royal, Japhet Tanganga, Pape Sarr.
